Today\u2019s guest deejay is Pierre Laplace.<\/p>\n\n

I discovered Pierre while listening to his 2019 album, You Disappeared<\/a><\/em>, recorded under the monicker Beyond the Ghost<\/a>. You Disappeared<\/em> felt like a soundtrack to a China Mi\u00e9ville<\/a> novel. In fact, Mi\u00e9ville\u2019s definition of weird fiction<\/a> perfectly describes Pierre\u2019s music; it \u201cevokes a sense of the numinous.\u201d His follow-up albums, Eternal Drift<\/a><\/em> and his recently released The Last Resort<\/a><\/em> continue to induce feelings of mystery and awe.<\/p>\n\n

Inviting Pierre to be a guest deejay on Soundwave was a no-brainer. I was surprised, however, to hear his selections for today\u2019s show.<\/p>\n\n

When I extend invitations for guest deejays to participate in the show, I allow them latitude to explore the format of ambient, classical, experimental and instrumental music. Some of the guest deejays will play tracks of their own music, and that\u2019s perfectly fine, but what I\u2019m hoping for is a mix of songs from other<\/em> musicians they love.<\/p>\n\n

I expected Pierre\u2019s mix to feature songs that are much like his own in feeling and tone. I was delighted to find his mix explored a different sonic landscape.<\/p>\n\n

To begin with, he opens his mix with a track from Deru<\/a>. I knew immediately that Pierre had something unusual in store for us. I\u2019ve been a fan of Deru for over a decade (hear my interview with Deru and his live set for solipsistic NATION<\/a>), so I was eager to go whatever journey Pierre was going to take me on.<\/p>\n\n

There are many twists and turns.<\/p>\n\n

Pierre\u2019s inclusion of Morphine<\/a> caught me by surprise but in context completely makes sense. Brian Eno and David Byrne\u2019s My Life in the Bush of Ghosts<\/a><\/em> is one of my favorite albums, and I was thrilled to hear a track from it included in Pierre\u2019s mix. The appearance of Ennio Morricone<\/a> was also a welcome surprise. I\u2019m also a fan of The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble<\/a> and The Mount Fuji Doommjazz Corporation<\/a> and have wondered when someone would play them on Soundwave. The Cinematic Orchestra<\/a> makes perfect sense within Pierre\u2019s mix, and David Bowie<\/a> pops up once again on Soundwave, making him the show\u2019s perhaps most featured artist.<\/p>\n\n

Stock up on provisions because Pierre is about to take you on a dark vision quest.<\/p>\n\n
