Today\u2019s guest deejay is Yann Novak<\/a>, the founder of Dragon\u2019s Eye Recordings<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

I met Yann when I showcased his label<\/a> on solipsistic NATION<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

I discovered Yann\u2019s label through Mike Lazarev<\/a>\u2019s music blog, Headphone Commute<\/a> (if you enjoy Soundwave, you\u2019re going to love Headphone Commute).<\/p>\n\n

Yann curates a heady offer of music through Dragon\u2019s Eye Recordings featuring notable artists such as Pinkcourtesyphone<\/a> (Richard Chartier<\/a>), Genrietta<\/a>, and Lawrence English<\/a>. Some of the label\u2019s releases are whimsical, some challenging, and some so ephemeral that you might imagine you dreamt of hearing it. But all the releases on his label are lovingly selected and demands to be listened to just as Yann\u2019s mix demands to be heard.<\/p>\n\n

A few highlights.<\/p>\n\n

The hairs went up on the back of my neck when I instantly recognized Gein\u014d Yamashirogumi<\/a>\u2019s score for the cyberpunk classic, Akira<\/a><\/em>. Back in the 80s, the movie was considered as imponderable as 2001: A Space Odyssey<\/a><\/em>, but Akira has influenced culture to such a degree that it seems straightforward by our current standards. Incidentally, you can purchase<\/a> Kaneda\u2019s jacket, who is the film\u2019s protagonist.<\/p>\n\n

Yann\u2019s inclusion of Billie Eilish<\/a> & ROSAL\u00cdA<\/a>\u2019s was an unexpected delight. Eilish is kind of cyberpunk herself, having sung about our anthropogenic<\/a> doom and interviewed<\/a> by an AI bot.<\/p>\n\n

The Future Sound Of London<\/a> make yet another appearance on Soundwave via Yann\u2019s mix. So much of the electronic music that was fasionalble in the late 80s seems dated but The Future Sound of London still feel timeless.<\/p>\n\n

Lloop<\/a> was also a surprise. I first heard Lloop when I showcased<\/a> The Agriculture<\/a> label on solipsistic NATION (mumbles) 15 years ago.<\/p>\n\n

I know it isn\u2019t true but I can\u2019t help but feel that Yann made this mix specifically for me. It\u2019s uncanny.<\/p>\n\n

Yann modestly didn\u2019t include his own music in his mix but I wanted to mention that Friday he released his new album, Lifeblood of Light and Rapture<\/a><\/em>., available through Room40<\/a> (streaming starts July 2). Yann is really proud of this album and he can\u2019t wait for everyone to experience it! He hopes it\u2019s just the kind of lightness\u2026 or darkness you need right now.<\/p>\n\n

Frank Riggio\u2019s Empreinte Musicale 3<\/em> LP<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n

Before I wrap this up, there are two things I need to mention.<\/p>\n\n

Frank Riggio<\/a> just released the third and last installment of his new trilogy, Empreinte Musicale 3<\/a><\/em>. It\u2019s just as weird and wonderful as his previous two albums. Go listen to it, and then buy it, and afterwards, listen to Frank\u2019s Soundwave mix<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Lastly, I believe I\u2019ll wrap up Soundwave sometime in 2022. I launched Soundwave to cope with the stress and isolation of the pandemic. I told myself that once COVID-19 is no longer the threat that grinds nations to a halt that the show willhave served it\u2019s purpose and that I\u2019d bring it to an end. Unless the pandemic spirals out of control again or unless I change my mind, I will release all the remaining mixes our generous guest deejays have provided for us.<\/p>\n\n
