Today\u2019s guest deejay is Boris Tyurin, AKA Out of Hell<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Out of Hell continues my exploration of musicians who mine the ores of ambient, classical, experimental, and instrumental on Bandcamp<\/a>. It\u2019s been a successful endeavor, and previous Bandcamp artists who have been guest deejays on SOUNDWAVE are Ishmael Cormack<\/a>, Tim Six of \u03a0\u0391\u039d\u0398\u0395\u039f\u039d Records<\/a>, and Ivan Somov, AKA Notnotice<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

I\u2019ll be honest, what made me listen to Out of Hell\u2019s was the influence of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft<\/a> on his music.<\/p>\n\n

It\u2019s interesting because Lovecraft\u2019s books are in the public domain Lovecraft permeates popular culture. In particular, his Cthulhu mythos<\/a>. You can find Lovecraft\u2019s tentacled Elder God in the form of crochet toys<\/a>, tiki mugs<\/a>, and pajamas<\/a>. The sublime terror of Cthulhu has been diminished into a safe, consumer item. The only people who tap into the nihilistic horror of Cthulhu are comic book writer Alan Moore<\/a>, role-playing game<\/a> creators, and bands such as Rudimentary Peni<\/a> and Skinny Puppy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Not everything Out of Hell records is touched by the tentacles of Cthulhu, but the influence is there. Out of Hell explores the realm of dark ambient. His music can be just as delicate and pretty as a lot of ambient music, but it\u2019s mysterious and often tinged with dream and anxiety. His mix is more than a selection of some of his best work. It\u2019s an experience to be had.<\/p>\n\n
