{"id":1578,"date":"2007-03-02T00:00:43","date_gmt":"2007-03-02T08:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/josephaleo.com\/blog\/?p=1578"},"modified":"2018-12-30T14:01:22","modified_gmt":"2018-12-30T22:01:22","slug":"solipsistic-nation-no-27-industrial-strength","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/josephaleo.com\/blog\/solipsistic-nation-no-27-industrial-strength\/","title":{"rendered":"solipsistic NATION No. 27: Industrial Strength"},"content":{"rendered":"<body><p>Industrial music\u2019s roots go back to the Futurims movement with works like <a title=\"Luigi Russolo web page\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luigi_Russolo\" target=\"_blank\">Luigi Russolo<\/a>\u2018s <i>The Art of Noises<\/i> and later in composer <a title=\"Edgard Var\u00e8se web page\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edgard_Var%C3%83%C2%A8se\" target=\"_blank\">Edgard Var\u00e8se<\/a>\u2018s <i>Po\u00e8me \u00c9lectronique<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1970s bands like <a title=\"Edgard Var\u00c3\u00a8se web page\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edgard_Var%C3%83%C2%A8se\" target=\"_blank\">Throbbing Gristle<\/a> and <a title=\"Edgard Var\u00c3\u00a8se web page\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edgard_Var%C3%83%C2%A8se\" target=\"_blank\">NON<\/a> utilized tape editing, stark percussion, and loops to create their dark and distorted music.  Bands like <a title=\"Cabaret Voltaire web page\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cabaret_Voltaire_%28band%29\" target=\"_blank\">Cabaret Voltaire<\/a> and <a title=\"SPK web page\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SPK_%28band%29\" target=\"_blank\">SPK<\/a> adopted these elements into their own work, often mixing repeating samples of speeches and dialogue from movies and speeches into their music.<\/p>\n<p>What most people now consider industrial music came from <a title=\"Ministry web page\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ministry_band\" target=\"_blank\">Ministry<\/a>. For better or worse, Ministry left their stamp on the genre with a sonic barrage of distorted drum machines and bludgeoning guitars. While I love <a title=\"Edgard Var\u00c3\u00a8se web page\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skinny_Puppy\" target=\"_blank\">Skinny Puppy<\/a> and their nightmarish soundscapes it\u2019s easy to understand why so many bands followed Ministry\u2019s lead. Not only is the music dark and aggressive but you can also thrash about in a mosh pit.
