SOUNDWAVE : 128 : STEFAN BECK

Today’s guest deejay is Stefan Beck, AKA Golden Brown.

I met Stefan through Steve Targo from Inner Islands after he guest deejayed on Soundwave. I asked Steve, whom he knew would share a mix on the show, and he recommended Stefan. I listened to Stefan’s music and lost myself in his gentle guitar playing, swathes of warm sounds, and field recordings. So we have Steve to thank for today’s gorgeous mix.

As is my habit, I reacquaint myself with the mixes sent my way two weeks before I share them with you. Stefan provided the soundtrack for hurricane Kay which hit Mexico this week. In the evenings, when it was cooler, I’d go for an hour-long walk and listen to Stefan’s mix. Wednesday was a very sensual night. There was a moment as I was walking past a canyon when a rivulet of sweat ran from my temple and behind my right ear. It cooled and evaporated immediately. There was a hint of sage in the air. And Stefan’s mix played over my AirPods. Delicious.

Friday, San Diego was awash with the rain from hurricane Kay. It was very dramatic. The sky was gloomy, the wind gusted from my patio door, and occasionally raindrops would land on my shoulders from my skylight window above me, all while Stefan’s mix playing in the background.

I hope Stefan’s mix provides an equally wonderful experience.

Stefan has a few words about his mix below.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Serge Timmers.

See you then.

The songs selected here don’t have any unifying theme apart from that they inspire me and put me in a certain 🌀zone🌀

I think they all have a lot of heart in them and make elegant use of space. Jerry Garcia appears here twice under the radar as well. I can’t resist.

I hope you enjoy!

SOUNDWAVE : 64 : SEAN HOCKING

Today’s guest deejay is Sean Hocking.

Sean is the host of Metal Postcard Records, an independent record label based out of Sydney. I met Sean nearly a decade ago when I interviewed him and showcased his label for solipsistic NATION. He releases great music through Metal Postcard Records, so I invited Sean to be our guest deejay last summer. It was a wonderful mix, so naturally, I asked Sean to delight us with another set.

A casual listen of Sean’s mix will leave you with the impression that it’s wonderful and whimsical. Its certainly that but a closer listen reveals depth and speaks to the human condition. It works on both levels, which is a neat trick. It’s also a bit of an Australia travelogue, so enjoy the ride!

If you want to hear more music from Sean, he also hosts Bottom of the Pops, which you can find on Spotify. It’s the Nuggets of internet radio. Sean also hosts shows on Dandelion Radio, FSK Radio out of Germany, and 8K in New Zealand.

Tuesday California officially opened up and eased pandemic restrictions.

I still wear a mask and socially distance in some situations but it’s nice to mingle with people and dine at restaurants. And it’s nice not wearing a mask at the gym, especially when I’m on the stair machine.

I’ll be listening to Sean’s mix on Fathers Day and hopefully hoping to go out for brunch with my family. If you’re a dad or have one, I hope you can do the same.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Yann Novak, the founder of Dragon’s Eye Recordings.

See you then!

This week’s SOUNDWAVE features an absolutely beautiful mix from our guest deejay, Carmen Rizzo!

Carmen is yet another musician I met through solipsistic NATION and when I launched SOUNDWAVE he was on my go to list. And Carmen’s mix is exactly the reason I wanted him tp participate on today’s show. Socket in your AirPods or crank up your speakers and you’ll see why.

As always, if you enjoy any of the songs you hear on today’s show, and how can you not, then please purchase one of their songs or even one of their albums.

Okay, I gotta go. I’m in Silicon Valley with my wife and kid who I’ve been reunited with after four months of being apart. Thanks, COVID-19. This town is super expensive but it’s also super cute. In fact, I must say “cute” a half dozen times a day. I walk down the street and say “That house is cute.” Or “That fire station is cute.” Or “That park is cute.” Anyway, were’ going to go to the Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park and take in some nature with our friend Moby (no, not that Moby) so I’m going to keep this short and go.

Join us again next week when our guest deejay will be Shad Marsh.

In the mean time, go outside. Maybe go to a state park.

Weekly Mix 15: April 16, 2017

Before we get to today’s show I want to wish everyone a Happy Easter. I’m not a religious guy myself but any chance to spend a day with the people I love is okay by me. This Easter we had lunch with our friends Alex and Thelma. We get together with them on a regular basis for outdoor movie nights, Halloween parties and trips to wineries in Ensenada. This time Alex and Thelma had us over for barbecue and it was delicious! With summer around the corner I really need to step up my grill game. Fortunately, I have my Patio Daddy-O cookbook my friend Diana gave me for a birthday present oh, a couple of decades ago. I’m going to pay it forward and give a copy to our oldest for his birthday. Cooking on a grill is a rite of passage for men and having a recipes like Cracklin’ Sugar-Charred Cowboy Steak or Dragonbreath Corn on the Cob in your back pocket is a necessity.

I ate too much at Alex and Thelma’s because later we went to our friends Jason and Tawnya’s for Easter and dinner and I barely had room for another meal. That’s a damn shame because Jason is a chef and he had cooked up some smoked ham; a salad of mint, peas and and beets; and another salad with black carrots. Black carrots, who knew there was such a thing. And Tawnya made a cheesecake dessert that was half lemon meringue. So good! Oh, yeah, and they were plying us with ice tea made with homemade limoncello! I was uncomfortably full and wished I hadn’t eaten so much earlier.

At least I could eat. Our boy Townes had a bout of food poisoning and threw up almost a dozen times during the night. Poor boy! Between me and you, I suspect when my boy throws he calculates how much collateral damage he can do because he seems to throw up everywhere. His bed, the sheets, the floor… I was up at three in the morning mopping up his vomit and washing his sheets.

Anyway, Townes felt terrible and wasn’t up for barbecue or smoked ham or chocolate eggs or jelly beans.

So that was my Easter.

Weekly Mix 2: January 15, 2017

Before we get to this week’s music I wanted to let you know that you can also hear The Weekly Mix every Sunday on KAOS Radio Austin at 6PM Central. KAOS Radio Austin used to be a pirate radio station but they’ve gone legit and now broadcast over the net instead of the airwaves, delivering the weirdness you’d expect from a city like Austin. I chatted with KAOS Radio Austin’s founding member and programmer, El Demento, last year for Pop Culture Intelligentsia, so it’s my great pleasure to be part of their radio station. It’s also my pleasure to have El Demento on today’s show and I hope to make it a tradition to talk with programmers from every radio station that carries The Weekly Mix.

You can find me online on Twitter at @josephaleo or on my website at josephaleo.com Want to contact me? Email me at joseph@josephaleo.com.
