SOUNDWAVE : 91 : ALEX HAAS

Today’s guest deejay is Alex Haas.

I’ve been a fan of Alex’s music since the last century. It feels strange to write that, but it’s true.

I discovered Alex on his Cypher 7 album, Decoder that he recorded with Jeff Bova. Decoder came in all all-back CD jewel case. Very mysterious and very sexy. Decoder was released on Strata, Bill Laswell’s sub-label of Subharmonic Records, and that was all I needed to know in my decision-making process to purchase the album. I was not disappointed. Decoder was as mysterious and sexy as its CD case. The music was minimal, sinuous, and entrancing.

I’ve been listening to Alex’s music over the decades. When his album, The Woods, recorded with Michel Banabila and Bill Laswell, popped up on my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist, I immediately invited Alex to guest deejay on Soundwave.

Alex’s mix is exactly what I expected and delights with music from unexpected sources. You’re in for a treat.

Before I get out of here, I want to wish everyone happy holidays.

I also encourage you to follow Genius and Soul on your favorite podcast app. Genius and Soul is a weekly show featuring jazz, Black classical music, and more, with mixes lovingly selected by our guest deejays. Our first guest deejay will be legendary composer, pianist, singer, and flautist Brian Jackson. Genius and Soul launches on January 1, 2022.

Join us next week when our guest deejay will be iu takahashi.

See you then!

solipsistic NATION No. 87: Glitterdämmerung

Damn, this week’s show is packed with great stuff!

When I relaunched solipsistic NATION as a podcast one of the first shows I did was a documentary about Nerdcore. Shortly afterwards I learned that Negin Farsad was also working on a documentary about the genre called Nerdcore Rising. The documentary was recently released and I knew I had to get Negin on the show to talk about her documentary.

Another person I’ve wanted to get on solipsistic NATION is drum and bass artist Panda. As luck would have it, Panda has put out a new album called Retake Manhattan that simply rocks! Panda and I have been exchanging emails during the last year and I nailed a date to get hm on the line to talk about his new CD. It’s rare to hear an electronic music concept album and Panda sails around the globe in a mere hour and ten minutes.

Speaking of new releases, Meat Beat Manifesto has released a new album titled Autoimmune that is so bass heavy that it could move a freight truck across a parking lot. Just imagine what it can do to your ears! I had the pleasure of seeing Meat Beat Manifesto last week and they put on an awesome show. They’re on the last leg of their U.S. tour so visit their website to see if they’re playing in your area. If you’ve missed them, no worries, Jack will be on next week’s show with a live recording of one of Meat Beat Manifesto’s performances.

I’ve mentioned previously that one of the blogs I frequently read is Igloo Magazine. I’ve been talking with Pietro Da Sacco, Igloo’s managing editor, and I asked him to come on this week’s show to talk about his ‘zine. Pietro will be back on solipsistic NATION next month with a beautiful mix of electronic music that’s going to make you weak at the knees.

A few months back solipsistic NATION was picked up by KYOURadio 1550 AM in San Francisco. KYOURadio plays an eclectic program of talk and music shows but what make the station truly unique that all the content comes from user generate content. That is to say, podcasts. I invited KYOURadio’s station manager, Stephen Page, to come on today’s show to talk about the station and the dramatic changes radio is currently going through.

Last, and by no stretch of the imagination, least, is an interview with Martin Rev and Alan Vega of Suicide. Alan and Martin are old school and began Suicide way back in the 70s. Often imitated but never duplicated, Suicide is one of the original proto-electronic music bands who have influenced genres such as techno, industrial and electroclash. Suicide was never ahead of their time, just that everyone else was behind the times and desperately trying to catch up to the path that Suicide was blazing.

solipsistic NATION No. 19: Special Guest, DJ Wayz

solipsistic NATION is a weekly podcast that features the best of all genres of electronic music. Sometimes I jump from genre to genre on a show and other times I’ll focus on a specific genre like house. solipsistic NATION also features interviews, documentaries and, from time to time, guest DJs.

Today’s guest DJ is Wayz. Wayz has been featured on Drum and Bass Arena’s podcast which caught the attention of Breakbeat Kaos‘s DJ Fresh, in turn leading to the subsequent signing of ‘Beyond’ to the high profile Dogs on Acid label. His tracks have also been featured on; Knowledge Magazine, 1xtra, and now has play support from some of the scene’s top DJ’s.

I interviewed Wayz on the small WORLD podcast back in October. After the interview I asked Wayz if he’d be willing to share his latest drum and bass mix on solipsistic NATION. If you dig today’s episode then you’ll definitely want to subscribe to Wayz’s podcast!

solipsistic NATION No. 3: Drum and Bass for Your Face!

The last show was so pretty that this week I’m going to harsh your mellow by bludgeoning you with drum and bass!

I’ve got some great shows in store for you. The next edition of solipsistic NATION will feature interviews and music from artists in the nerdcore community such as MC Frontalot and YTcracker. I’m also putting together a show where I’ll be playing music from The Agriculture as well as interviewing a few musicians from their roster of artists like David Last and, hopefully, DJ Olive. Speaking of deejays, I’m also planning on having some upcoming shows with sets by DJ Eve Falcon and Wayz.

If you’re an electronic musician and would like to have your music featured on solipsistic NATION hit me up with an email. Drum and bass, trip hop, industrial, etc. It doesn’t mattter what the genre is, as long as the music is dope!

solipsistic NATION No. 1: Relaunch!

I had always intended to bring solipsistic NATION out of retirement but there was always some sort of technical problem that prevented me from relaunching the podcast.

Originally I was going to use Macromedia‘s SoundEdit which came bundled with Director. Unfortunately, when I mixed down a set the track would be in mono and distorted. I tried doing the show using DJ-1800 and recording the set with WireTap Pro or Audio Hijack Pro but there was a touch of distortion in the recording I could never eliminate.

Last month the connection to the hard drive in my ancient G4 tower died. I didn’t have the cash to buy a new tower so I purchased a Mac Mini. The Mac Mini was much more powerful than my G4 and as an added bonus, it came pre-installed with GarageBand. Suddenly all my problems were resolved in one fell swoop.

There are some deejays who like to do everything live without a net and on the fly. I was never one of those deejays. Oh, I’m fine at improvising live sets but my preference has always been to map out my shows in advance, meticulously plotting the segues and overall flow of a mix. Given my anal retentiveness for planning shows GarageBand is perfect with how I like to work.

I hope you enjoy today’s first show in the relaunching of solipsistic NATION!
