We talk to Mancy and too be honest, I’m terrified to listen to the interview because I was young and dumb. Even more terrifying, I wasn’t that young. I’m some time I had had a few drinks in me. Even so, I’m posting this show, warts and all. Who knows, maybe I can muster up the courage to listen to the interview. And even if the interview is terrible, the music on today’s show is awesome! Dead Can Dance, Big Black, Judy Garland and, for some reason, a lot of Cure. And lots of other stuff, of course.

Another fantastic freeform show for you this weekend, although this one leans on the heavier side of things. Heavier, as in heavy metal! I’ve got some Soundgarden, Metallica, Slayer, Biohazard and Voïvod to punish your ears.

I’ve also got a special treat for you: The Impotent Seasnakes! The late, great Mikey Dee (http://onthetownwithmikeydee.com) turned me on to these guys right about the time I started spinning at Mofo when he played “I Wanna Fuck Your Dad.” The song was so offensive and being knee-deep in punk I fell in love. It was some years later that I got to see them perform at a nightclub on Lansdowne Street that I discovered that they were actually a punk rock glam band. They dressed the part (wigs, boas, fishnet stockings, etc) and burnt effigies of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley on stage, which they then attacked with a chainsaw. So awesome!

Turn up the volume and kick out the mutherfucking jams!

Step into the Wayback Machine and hear my set from June 15, 1996 🙂 1996 me complains a lot about technical problems with the turntables and CD players but 2014 me is impressed with the music 1996 me was playing. Freeform, as always, and always the very best of it. Who doesn’t love Johnny Clarke’s “Creation Rebel?” And some sage words from Marshall McLuhan?! Are you kidding me? And Slayer and Metallica do covers of punk rock classics. And I adore Bahia Sunsets “Somewhere Not Here.”There’s too much not to love. So make sure you have a solid connection to the Bluetooth in your car stereo or your EarPods firmly socketed in, because it’s about to go all over the place!

June 1, 1996 | WMFO 91.5 FM

The Wayback Machine is set for June 1, 1996. The format? Freeform. This is a lovely show chock full of reggae and dub, a rare demo of The Beatles “Strawberry Fields Forever”, some exotica from Lalo Schifrin and the Vampyros Lesbos soundtrack, some punk, metal and rock for good measure. We also pay our respects to Timothy Leary, who passed the day before. Come on in, the water’s fine!

Freeform as usual but here are a few highlights. I played a track from Alice Coopers foray into new wave rom their Flush the Fashion LP. You heard me. Alice Cooper. New wave. We’ll also hear Tom Zé deconstructing Tropicália. John Cage doesn’t play 4′33″ of silence. Keola Beamer plays some mournfully beautiful Hawaiian slack-key guitar. And some how I manage to play Enya and Pantera on the same show. Yeah, I did that.

May 28, 1996 | WMFO 91.5 FM | KING DUB Version 1.1 [Part 2]

Dub, for the uninitiated, began simply as an instrumental of a reggae song that were released on the B side of 45 singles. It took the genius of Lee “Scratch” Perry and King Tubby of remixing those instrumentals and transforming them almost beyond recognition, fading each instrument in and out and applying echo and flanger liberally where needed. Dub became a genre unto itself and continued to grow and metamorphosize. Punk, industrial, ambient, pop, country—their musical distinctiveness were absorbed into dub.

While I love all forms of dub I’m partial to the stuff that’s more ambient and psychedelic. I can get lost in those realms of dub and in my mind’s eye I conjured King Dub, the Mystic Selector. King Dub became a mythic DJ who I would channel every now and then, playing dub drenched tracks over the airways of WMFO.

March 30, 1996 | WMFO 91.5 FM

The last two weeks I picked up over 500 followers on Mixcloud. If that’s you, welcome!

Let me explain to you how the show works. Each week I post a digitized recording taken from cassettes of my old shows at WMFO to Mixcloud. The shows are typically freeform and often feature live bands from Boston during the 90s. This week yhe Wayback Machine takes us to March 30, 1996 at WMFO. The Weaklings have just played a rocking live set and are about to join me in the studio for an interview. I hope past me doesn’t prove to be an inane host! Still, lots of freeform music for you to enjoy. Lot’s of punk, rock and indie rock, specifically, as well as a dash of electronica and reggae.

Since I started digitizing cassette of my shows from MOFO and posting them on Mixcloud I’ve been dreading this show. Not this show specifically, but one like it. It’s a show where there’s dead air. Not seconds. But minutes. Long, terrible minutes. I don’t remember what caused the dead air. Some broken equipment, no doubt. But there it is.

I could edit it out and you’d be none the wiser but 1) I’m going to release these shows, warts and all; and 2) I’m lazy. Despite the dead air there’s some moments of brilliance. Segueing from Sepultura’s “Lookaway” to Steve Fisk “Johnny Smoke,” really? That’s just brilliant. Good job, 1996 me. And then, of course, a LIVE SET from MANCY! This is great indie-pop-punk stuff and I know you’re gonna love it.

Before I go, do any radio deejays out there have anxiety dreams that manifest themselves as you in at your station and you caused dead air? Those dreams fill me with dread.
