The last two weeks I picked up over 500 followers on Mixcloud. If that’s you, welcome!

Let me explain to you how the show works. Each week I post a digitized recording taken from cassettes of my old shows at WMFO to Mixcloud. The shows are typically freeform and often feature live bands from Boston during the 90s. This week yhe Wayback Machine takes us to March 30, 1996 at WMFO. The Weaklings have just played a rocking live set and are about to join me in the studio for an interview. I hope past me doesn’t prove to be an inane host! Still, lots of freeform music for you to enjoy. Lot’s of punk, rock and indie rock, specifically, as well as a dash of electronica and reggae.

Since I started digitizing cassette of my shows from MOFO and posting them on Mixcloud I’ve been dreading this show. Not this show specifically, but one like it. It’s a show where there’s dead air. Not seconds. But minutes. Long, terrible minutes. I don’t remember what caused the dead air. Some broken equipment, no doubt.But there it is.

I could edit it out and you’d be none the wiser but 1) I’m going to release these shows, warts and all; and 2) I’m lazy. Despite the dead air there’s some moments of brilliance. Segueing from Sepultura’s “Lookaway” to Steve Fisk “Johnny Smoke,” really? That’s just brilliant. Good job, 1996 me. And then, of course, a LIVE SET from MANCY! This is great indie-pop-punk stuff and I know you’re gonna love it.

Before I go, do any radio deejays out there have anxiety dreams that manifest themselves as you in at your station and you caused dead air? Those dreams fill me with dread.

This week the Wayback Machine unceremoniously dumps into the middle of a show in February 17, 1996. Do I even need to say it at this point? Lot of new followers on Mixcloud this week so I will–this your typical freeform show. Which is ti say there’s nothing typical about it. I literally have crates of cassettes of shows I recorded while I was a DJ at WMFO. And all of them are unlabeled. I’m slowly making my way through them, digitizing them and uploading them to Mixcloud. Since none of the cassettes are labeled I can only upload parts of shows but today’s show is the rare exception! I found both cassettes of my show with guests Daniel Orlansky and Zack Sherzad perfuming on the didgeridoo, which was very big in the mind 1990s. So get ready to go an an audio walkabout into dreamtime. And of course your usual freeform mix of music from dub to exotica.

I hate to keep patting myself on the back but these shows from (almost) 10 years ago are great! A couple tracks from Taratino’s Dusk Till Dawn soundtrack, some dub from King Dub, hip hop from Ice Cube and Boogie Down Productions, mournful epicness from Swans—your usual swinging freeform mix from yours truly. My timing was a little off on some of the segues, so there’s a flaw for you? See, not all perfect.

It gives me a perverse sense of pleasure that my old cassettes of my shows deejaying at WMFO have been digitized and having a second life on Mixcloud. If you’re enjoying the shows, why not share them with a friend who also has excellent taste in music.
